About this artwork
Smiley I is part of my "Scrapboard" series, in which I explore familiar symbols and their transformation. The smiley is one of the most recognizable symbols of our time. It represents joy, optimism, and emotional clarity. Precisely because its meaning seems so self-evident, it is particularly well-suited for questioning this certainty.
In this painting, the symbol remains clearly recognizable, yet simultaneously loses some of its certainty. Luminous… yellow, visible reworkings, and spontaneous traces of the painting process lend the motif an unusual openness. Behind the seemingly simple smile, an image emerges that is less unambiguous than it initially appears.
The smiley face remains a symbol, but opens itself to new meanings and personal associations. From an everyday pictorial symbol emerges a painting about perception, vulnerability, and the complexity of human emotions.
