Quite a different jump in the evolution of the wood forms, Head No.1 was definitely inspired by mid-century modern art, particularly that of Brancusi, whilst remaining personal in style and expression. In retrospect, the piece encompasses the smooth geometry of the majority of the wood forms while endeavouring into a conceptual realm of its own, namely as a highly abstracted reference to a human head—fittingly so (abstracted), as the (abstract) psychology… which takes place within this body part plays such a dominant role in our lives. Some notable features of this piece include, the refined yet soft edges of the concavities, as well as the dynamic slant which diagonally extends this complex form, a form involving the synthesis of both round and rectilinear curves. The sculpture is carved from a single piece of Western Red Cedar using hand tools, the surface is the natural wood, smooth polished with fine grit sandpaper.
Mike Sasaki, based in BC, Canada, creates abstract metaphysical sculptures with a keen affinity for drawing and carving. His tools and techniques, curated from international traditions, imbue his sculptures with a unique blend of organic, curvilinear and geometric elements. Profoundly inspired by metaphysics, Sasaki’s artwork resonates with a sense of unity, groundedness, and the constant-interaction between form and formlessness; eliciting feelings tied to our boundless potential for love, joy, and spiritual liberation.
