In the early morning of the 13th April 2020 I woke up. I knew that if I fell back to sleep, when I awoke again the images would be gone. So I got up and scribbled them down on a sketch pad before going back to sleep. Those scribbles were the beginning of what became 'Cometh the Beast', an intricate, terrifying, dystopian nightmare of a piece inspired by all that was going on in 2020 (COVID, lockdown, psyops etc).
The initial idea is the spiderish… silicon chip creature extending its limbs to encompase the globe, aided by robotic entities inserting themselves/needles into heads and babies, reflecting the concept of the 5th Industrial Revolution. Various themes can be picked out - controled media narratives, the dumbing down of the population, transhumanism, Nazism and Eugenics. Popular cultures such as Mickey Mouse, Pacman and Spongebob also make an appearance.
Controversial and disturbing, this artwork will challenge and evoke interest and discussion whever it is displayed.
Anthony Hodgson is a self-taught painter and visual artist who works primarily with pen, pastels, and acrylics, deeply influenced by his upbringing amidst religious art, fantasy, and sci-fi culture. His style fuses Surrealism, Existentialism, and Pop Art, blending symbolic dreamscapes, Celtic knots, contemporary icons, and mythic narratives to reveal the hidden tensions of existence. In each piece, he seeks to mirror the human condition, evoking a sense of redemption through brokenness and celebrating the mysterious interplay of darkness, light, and the hope that emerges from within our fractured lives.
