About this artwork
I originally scribbled down the idea for this artwork in 2016 before committing it to canvas in 2025.
'Return of the King' takes its title from the 3rd book in JRR Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy and is inspired by several books, most notably the biblical books of Revelation and Daniel.
The artwork explores the theme of existence via images drawn from these books - the battle between good and evil, the suffering of the 'little people', the… war and death promoted by the profiteers ('the men in black') via mainstream media and the return of a king.
With the return of the king, the reign of the dragon - source of the deception - comes to an end. Its and their crimes are punished and a sentence is served, in order that the outcome is just.
So we see that the dragon is being chained by a mighty angel, aided by bow-wielding cherubs. Traditionally cherubs symbolise love so finally, in the end, evil is overpowered by love, in order that peace may rule and the Golden Age begin.
Anthony Hodgson is a self-taught painter and visual artist who works primarily with pen, pastels, and acrylics, deeply influenced by his upbringing amidst religious art, fantasy, and sci-fi culture. His style fuses Surrealism, Existentialism, and Pop Art, blending symbolic dreamscapes, Celtic knots, contemporary icons, and mythic narratives to reveal the hidden tensions of existence. In each piece, he seeks to mirror the human condition, evoking a sense of redemption through brokenness and celebrating the mysterious interplay of darkness, light, and the hope that emerges from within our fractured lives.
