Kandake was created in 2013 and was a return to the usual surreal style after the more illustrative 'Redemption', 2008 and 'Paean to Whitby', 2012.
The artwork was named 'Kandake', the origin of the name of the artist's daughter, Candice. The Kandake were the matriachal leaders of the ancient empire of Aksum (bottom right), and were one of the few powers at the time to bring the march of the Roman Empire (referenced by the SPQR to the left of the… female archer - a nod to the legend of the Amazons). Alot of imagery relates to the female: hence the cloud of lactating breasts feeding the earth above the Ankh, Egyptian symbol for life. Chemical symbols, atomic structures and the biology of conception abound.
Finally, the semi-abstract figures in the top-left corner are a nod to the back-breaking work of centuries of women labouring in the paddy fields of S E Asia.
Kandake is in its essence, my paean to the strength and spirit of Woman.
Anthony Hodgson is a self-taught painter and visual artist who works primarily with pen, pastels, and acrylics, deeply influenced by his upbringing amidst religious art, fantasy, and sci-fi culture. His style fuses Surrealism, Existentialism, and Pop Art, blending symbolic dreamscapes, Celtic knots, contemporary icons, and mythic narratives to reveal the hidden tensions of existence. In each piece, he seeks to mirror the human condition, evoking a sense of redemption through brokenness and celebrating the mysterious interplay of darkness, light, and the hope that emerges from within our fractured lives.
