I completed 'Imprisoned' in December 2013.
Words are powerful: the spoken word can encourage and build up or pull down and destroy.
I struggled for many years to be free of words that had imprisoned and shaped me; words that led to struggles with low self-esteem, depression, self-harming and addiction.
Nakedness in art - the nude - often equates with beauty: a celebration of the human form. Here, it means vulnerability and humiliation. Thus the… stance of the subject reflects that: the position is foetal: an attempt to protect and hide myself from the world. The cage represents my mental prison: look closely, and you can see that the bars themselves are made up of words - 'you are worthless', 'failure' etc: the words of peers - parents, teachers, priests - which had imprisoned me.
In creating this piece, I wanted to express recognition and solidarity with those who suffer in this way and to encourage us all to be more aware of what we say to others.
Anthony Hodgson is a self-taught painter and visual artist who works primarily with pen, pastels, and acrylics, deeply influenced by his upbringing amidst religious art, fantasy, and sci-fi culture. His style fuses Surrealism, Existentialism, and Pop Art, blending symbolic dreamscapes, Celtic knots, contemporary icons, and mythic narratives to reveal the hidden tensions of existence. In each piece, he seeks to mirror the human condition, evoking a sense of redemption through brokenness and celebrating the mysterious interplay of darkness, light, and the hope that emerges from within our fractured lives.
