Completed in late 2025, Whoosh! began as a reflection on the Roman version of the Medusa story, whereby a beautiful, young woman is overpowered and raped by Neptune, the god of the sea whilst praying in the temple of Minerva. When Minerva learns of this, she curses the young woman, turning her long hair into a mass of snakes and anyone that the young woman looks at, into stone. Thus she becomes the terrifying Medusa. I have portrayed her crying as… I feel her story is a tragic but universal one, where women are punished for the crimes of others, and not the abusers.
Contemporary issues that reflect this have found their way onto the paper too – the sacrifice of women for profit, where vulnerable girls are abused, trafficked and silenced by those in positions of power, the battle between traditional farming and powerful, globalist 'green' business. Icons from popular culture, like the TARDIS of long-running British Sci-fi series, Dr Who and the Enterprise of Star Trek, also appear.
Anthony Hodgson is a self-taught painter and visual artist who works primarily with pen, pastels, and acrylics, deeply influenced by his upbringing amidst religious art, fantasy, and sci-fi culture. His style fuses Surrealism, Existentialism, and Pop Art, blending symbolic dreamscapes, Celtic knots, contemporary icons, and mythic narratives to reveal the hidden tensions of existence. In each piece, he seeks to mirror the human condition, evoking a sense of redemption through brokenness and celebrating the mysterious interplay of darkness, light, and the hope that emerges from within our fractured lives.
