About this artwork
‘Musalaha ‘ is the Arabic word for ‘reconciliation’.
My aim with this piece was to visual hope, that most essential of human aspirations.
Once I had decided that a Jew and a Palestinian hugging would be a powerful symbol of the hope I wanted to convey, I used two friends of mine as models and got to work. I placed the two figures on the quay of the port of Gaza City, to emphasise what such hope can bring about.
The painting was inspired by the organisation… of the same name based in Jerusalem which I have supported for a number of years.
It seeks to build bridges between Palestinian Christians and Messianic Jews through their shared love of Isa/Yeshua (Jesus).
The current conflict in the Holy Land reverberates around the world and often provokes strong feelings on both sides of the political, cultural and religious divide yet the existence, success and growth of organisations like 'Musalaha' proves that there is still hope and that peace and reconciliation are possible.
Anthony Hodgson is a self-taught painter and visual artist who works primarily with pen, pastels, and acrylics, deeply influenced by his upbringing amidst religious art, fantasy, and sci-fi culture. His style fuses Surrealism, Existentialism, and Pop Art, blending symbolic dreamscapes, Celtic knots, contemporary icons, and mythic narratives to reveal the hidden tensions of existence. In each piece, he seeks to mirror the human condition, evoking a sense of redemption through brokenness and celebrating the mysterious interplay of darkness, light, and the hope that emerges from within our fractured lives.
