'Condemned' was finished in 2014 and was inspired by the stories of two women I knew.
The first woman was a colleague named 'Dolores'. This name means suffering in Spanish. Dolores told me that her parents had wanted a boy but she was born instead, so she was named 'Dolores', expressing her parent's disappointment. She grew up knowing that she was not what her parents wanted. This story has stayed with the artist all his life. In 'Condemned',… by the woman's feet, a note says 'We wanted a boy'.
The second woman was brought up by a father who was very attentive but whose love was conditioned by her success, according to his exacting standards. Sadly, her success was never enough. As a result, she came to believe she was worthless. In the picture the woman is surrounded by words of condemnation which are scrawled on her bedroom walls.
'Condemned' is my homage to all women who have suffered as a result of the impossible expectations that were placed on them by those they loved.
Anthony Hodgson is a self-taught painter and visual artist who works primarily with pen, pastels, and acrylics, deeply influenced by his upbringing amidst religious art, fantasy, and sci-fi culture. His style fuses Surrealism, Existentialism, and Pop Art, blending symbolic dreamscapes, Celtic knots, contemporary icons, and mythic narratives to reveal the hidden tensions of existence. In each piece, he seeks to mirror the human condition, evoking a sense of redemption through brokenness and celebrating the mysterious interplay of darkness, light, and the hope that emerges from within our fractured lives.
