Having grown up with the evocative artwork of the Lion's Children's Bible, one of the stories that struck me the most was that of 'The Great Flood'. My young mind was in awe of the sheer scale, tragedy and pathos of this ancient disaster. Later, I saw the same theme executed on a much larger scale in John Martin's masterpiece 'The Deluge' at The Tate Britain in London.
Using a Mitsubishi Unipen 0.5 on Canson 220gsm, I completed 'Deluge' in April… 2020. It is inspired by the many flood myths of our shared history, found in all world cultures, from the Biblical deluge to the Greek account of the destruction of Atlantis to the Inca, Toltec and Aztec tellings of the Great Flood. Here I have tried to encompass the many elements of these stories: the rising seas, drowning civilisations, peoples and creatures, falling angels and the dark, rain-filled clouds and lightning that so many accounts recall. In the distance, the Ark whilst above all, the All-Seeing Eye of the Creator weeps.
Anthony Hodgson is a self-taught painter and visual artist who works primarily with pen, pastels, and acrylics, deeply influenced by his upbringing amidst religious art, fantasy, and sci-fi culture. His style fuses Surrealism, Existentialism, and Pop Art, blending symbolic dreamscapes, Celtic knots, contemporary icons, and mythic narratives to reveal the hidden tensions of existence. In each piece, he seeks to mirror the human condition, evoking a sense of redemption through brokenness and celebrating the mysterious interplay of darkness, light, and the hope that emerges from within our fractured lives.
