I completed ‘Redemption' in June 2008 at a time of great personal turmoil. It is a powerful piece in intricate inkwork on paper. This is certainly not ‘feel-good’ art; nevertheless it pulls the viewer into its intricate, surrealist, existential symbolism. Within the artwork, we are struck by powerful motifs: a drinker being strangled by the neck of a bottle; a man being torn apart by the beast within his computer screen; the observer who sees only… a shadow in a mirror or the brokenness of the family tree. These reveal to us how, in so many ways in life, we can, like the Little Red Riding Hood of the fairy tale, stray from the path, becoming lost to ourselves and those around us. In doing so, the picture explores the psychological and spiritual conflicts around existence, religion, sexuality, addiction and self-esteem before offering a way out as the victim finally finds redemption.
Anthony Hodgson is a self-taught painter and visual artist who works primarily with pen, pastels, and acrylics, deeply influenced by his upbringing amidst religious art, fantasy, and sci-fi culture. His style fuses Surrealism, Existentialism, and Pop Art, blending symbolic dreamscapes, Celtic knots, contemporary icons, and mythic narratives to reveal the hidden tensions of existence. In each piece, he seeks to mirror the human condition, evoking a sense of redemption through brokenness and celebrating the mysterious interplay of darkness, light, and the hope that emerges from within our fractured lives.
