A very dark piece from a very dark time in my life: my own version of 'Paradise Lost'. Themes from previous works are revisited but the images are darker and more haunting. As the title suggests, it is innocence, symbolised by the foetus - which is the victim. And the perpetrator here is the city, represented by tower blocks which transmogrify into burning candles. The stylised house - perhaps recalling happier childhood days - is falling down, whilst… the smoke from its chimney is transformed into demons. Even the 'smileys' have been shot down by spears whilst the cross, previously a symbol of hope, is dissolving even as it is devoured by the dragon. There are reprieves - faeries hang from grass stalks in the top-left corner and in the bottom-right, a moonlit shoreline but these do little to dispel the overriding gloom and it is Death, as represented by the skull, who seems to be the victor here. If you are someone who likes their art with a touch of the insane then this is for you.
Anthony Hodgson is a self-taught painter and visual artist who works primarily with pen, pastels, and acrylics, deeply influenced by his upbringing amidst religious art, fantasy, and sci-fi culture. His style fuses Surrealism, Existentialism, and Pop Art, blending symbolic dreamscapes, Celtic knots, contemporary icons, and mythic narratives to reveal the hidden tensions of existence. In each piece, he seeks to mirror the human condition, evoking a sense of redemption through brokenness and celebrating the mysterious interplay of darkness, light, and the hope that emerges from within our fractured lives.
