I've spent a lot of my life working in care, with differently abled people. I wanted this picture to be an homage to all the clients and carers who day in, day out, live and work together, often looked down upon by a society which doesn't value them, yet spend huge amounts of time, attention, patience building and sustaining profound relationships in which are often very difficult circumstances.
The model in the picture is Kieran, a young man I… used to work with who was paraplegic. Despite his physical limitations, Kieran was very positive in his daily approach to life, much more so than many I know who seemingly have everything. He also had a wicked sense of humour and was, in short, a joy and a blessing to work with.
I called this piece 'Dancing with Angels' for several reasons. Firstly, people with disabilities in some cultures were called angels; secondly, I think the carers are like angels, and lastly, I'm sure Kieran was, and is dancing with the angels now.
Anthony Hodgson is a self-taught painter and visual artist who works primarily with pen, pastels, and acrylics, deeply influenced by his upbringing amidst religious art, fantasy, and sci-fi culture. His style fuses Surrealism, Existentialism, and Pop Art, blending symbolic dreamscapes, Celtic knots, contemporary icons, and mythic narratives to reveal the hidden tensions of existence. In each piece, he seeks to mirror the human condition, evoking a sense of redemption through brokenness and celebrating the mysterious interplay of darkness, light, and the hope that emerges from within our fractured lives.
