I initially scribbled down the idea for ‘The Bridge’ in a journal in 2003. It then reappeared in a sketch book 10 years later before I finally put pastel to paper in 2014.
Although the Crucifixion has remained classical subject matter for artists for centuries, like Dalì in his ‘Christ of St John of the Cross’, I wanted to portray it from a non-classical angle. I also wanted to portray the body of the Christ as realistically as possible - bloodied,… naked and torn. In addressing the metaphysical theme of the topic, I have presented the cross and the outstretched arms of the Christ as a bridge reconciling earth with heaven, being the ultimate expression of the Father’s love and desire to be reunited with his lost, broken children. These can be seen being led by angels in the dark valley - 'this mortal coil' - beneath the cross.
The original of 'The Bridge' has been exhibited around the UK since 2015 whilst the framed print adorns the walls of homes as far as the USA.
Anthony Hodgson is a self-taught painter and visual artist who works primarily with pen, pastels, and acrylics, deeply influenced by his upbringing amidst religious art, fantasy, and sci-fi culture. His style fuses Surrealism, Existentialism, and Pop Art, blending symbolic dreamscapes, Celtic knots, contemporary icons, and mythic narratives to reveal the hidden tensions of existence. In each piece, he seeks to mirror the human condition, evoking a sense of redemption through brokenness and celebrating the mysterious interplay of darkness, light, and the hope that emerges from within our fractured lives.
