About this artwork
I originally drew this idea in my sketchbook whilst staying at my in-laws for Christmas in 2012.
Having gone through various counseling and therapy sessions, I had come to understand that often we wear masks for others.
Sometimes this is in order to hide what's beneath rather than being honest with our emotions, or because we think that if we reveal what's really going on people won't like us anymore. Or again, because we live in a society which… regards those who show their emotions as weak.
Sometimes though, we reach a point in life where we can't keep up the facade any longer; perhaps a melt-down or breakdown has forced the revealing of the chaos and hurt inside: sometimes we have to take off the mask.
This is my symbolic interpretation of that moment.
