About this artwork
Tree VI belongs to my series "Smear Board," in which I examine familiar pictorial symbols and the loss of their apparent certainty. The tree traditionally represents growth, life, stability, and rootedness—but in this painting, this familiar symbol clearly begins to lose its order.
The trunk and crown are still recognizable, yet their boundaries are increasingly dissolving. Different shades of green overlap, areas of color shift and fade, while… spontaneous marks and corrections remain visible. The tree seems to assert itself between clear form and painterly dissolution.
I am not interested in its disappearance, but in its continued existence. Despite all disturbances, the tree remains present. Its order is damaged, but not lost.
Tree VI combines expressive oil painting with simple symbolic language, thus becoming a picture about change, resilience and the fragility of supposed stability.
