About this artwork
Flower VII belongs to my series "Smear Board," in which I explore familiar pictorial symbols and the loss of their apparent certainty. The flower remains recognizable as a motif, but its simple order has already been largely disrupted.
Against a vibrant blue background, a red-orange blossom and large green leaves encounter spontaneous traces of color, overpainting, and visible corrections. Lines lose their clear function, colors transgress boundaries,… and individual gestures develop a life of their own. Yet the original form asserts itself within this painterly turmoil. Flower VII combines expressive oil painting with a deliberately simple symbolic language, thus becoming an image about change, uncertainty, and the fragility of supposed order.
