With my series "Smear Board," I explore what happens when familiar symbols lose their apparent clarity. The flower is one of the most recognizable symbols of all. Everyone recognizes it immediately—and associates it with positive ideas. It is precisely this self-evidence that interests me.
In Flower IX, the flower remains as a motif, but the painting begins to alter its certainty. Bold layers of color, spontaneous gestures, and visible reworkings… lend the image great dynamism. The symbol is not dissolved, but rather opened up. It moves between clarity and change, inviting the viewer to reconsider the familiar form.
I am fascinated by the moment when a simple symbol becomes ambiguous. A flower doesn't create a riddle, but rather an open image that leaves room for personal memories, associations, and experiences.
