With my series "Smear Board," I explore how familiar symbols can lose their apparent clarity. The flower is one of the simplest pictorial symbols of all. Everyone recognizes it immediately – and associates it with positive ideas such as nature, growth, or beauty.
In Flower IV, this simple form is retained, but the painting technique begins to transform it. Visible brushstrokes, spontaneous decisions, and small corrections bring the motif to life.… The flower remains recognizable without being confined to a single meaning.
I am interested in the moment when a familiar symbol is revealed. From a seemingly simple motif, an image emerges that poses fewer questions than it answers, inviting the viewer to develop their own associations.
