About this artwork
There were some really great percussionist to come out of Cuba in the 1940s-50s. One such musician was the conga player Armando Paraza. Born in Havana he was orphaned as a child and by age 7 was living on the streets. He had various jobs to support himself selling vegetables coaching boxing, and playing Simi-pro baseball. When he heard a band at the baseball game he tried out for the band without experience and got the job playing congas. He left… Cuba and came to New York in 1949. He started there by playing with Machito, then playing in Charlie Parkers band. Later in the 1950s he played with Cal Tjader and with Dave Brubeck. In 1954 he moved to San Francisco where he would play with Gabor Szabo and Harry Mandel. In the 1970s he started a long tenure with Carlos Santana and the group Santana. He passed away in 2014 at the age of 89. The painting is titled 'Armando Paraza'.
