About this artwork
The artist discovered this face in a recycled oil pan from a car. Shaping the head by eliminating steel material, bending and welding, and utilizing an already existing hole as one eye, the artist enlarged and matched it. He is fascinated with using many individual components collectively ( the valve "headress") or cutting up parts and arranging the components in another orientation ( circular steel diaphragm spring teeth). an automatic transmission in this fashion honours the complexity f the parts which would be lost if used individually. The artist's response to the overall work was to eschew solid painted surfaces by breaking them up through sanding.

Jeff Mann is an award-winning sculptor based in Canada whose works have been exhibited both nationally and in the United States. He describes his intuitive based artistic process as eschewing narrative or representation and being environmentally based. Unlike abstract or intuitive art, Mann's work often centers around the car and computers, which he believes define our culture. His diverse compositions are created using a variety of materials which include steel and aluminum.
