History of Marine Painting

Marine painting is a special genre of figurative painting. It emerged during the Dutch Renaissance in the seventeenth century, thanks to landscape architects like Jacob Von Ruysdael who exploited the artistic possibilities of the representation of boats or ports. Naval painting saw great success in the 18th century, especially the Paintings of harbours with the Italian movement of the vedute pioneered by the artist Canaletto; Naval painting was also highly appreciated in royal and princely circles, where artists were commissioned for precise and detailed representations of naval battles. The ship-portrait genre was also developing, with marine paintings representing a single boat in great detail. In the 19th century marine painting took a new direction thanks to the Romantic artists, who depicted the marine landscape painting with a dramatic and majestic force, often representing marine painting stormy landscapes or stormy sea paintings. The impressionist painters have also painted many coastal scenes of beaches , cliffs and rivers, especially Claude Monet or Alfred Sisley.

At SINGULART, we represent many artists who paint views of harbors or seascapes in a more modern and diverse style than that of their predecessors. The Franco-Vietnamese painter Olivier Messas draws his inspiration from his travels and creates marine paintings where the calm sea is punctuated by white sails, with a very personal style characterized by bright colors and crisp lines. The English painter Tony Feld specializes in seaside painting, that shows the damaging impact of human activity on the natural environment.
